Love Parade – Rocking Up Berlin

It’s rocking fellows! Its time to beat it to rhythm and dance to electronic music. Its time to spread the Big “l” letter word ‘The Love’. Its time to get on to streets to yell and roar to the world its time to extend our friendship and let the peace reign.

Though The Love Parade is nothing but raucous, rowdy, boisterous and flamboyant Festival of Germany celebrated in Berlin. The largest and oldest festival of electronic music in world. It is held in second or third weekend in July and lasts a week with number of after parties.

Millions of people attend this festival and be a part of the parade as well as the rave parties arranged after the Parade.

All the enthusiastic crowd gets on to the streets with music blaring out. The Parade starting around 2 pm and continuing till late in evening and then Voila! To after parties as the whole city is transformed in one riotous and vast Club. The event has themes very year, according to that people decorate and dress up them. Fifty gigantic trucks with some two fifty world Famous DJ’s would blast out techno, trance, out house music. It rocks and it shakes the territory up. The people dancing, hips swaying, rock and roll to head banging. Its rhythm divine and let your hips don’t lie. The crowd gets maddening with music and getting in vibes of partying. You can even stand as spectator, yet your feet will not stop dancing to the tune’s of Dj’s console. The hedonistic crowd is famous and dressed up or down in kinky, trendy and creative costumes. Their ‘back-in-day’ rave costumes and gaudy may be at times vulgar dresses are what crowd wears. Furry leg warmers, feathers, exotic jewellery, Bikinis, of course the glow sticks and whistles to blow out the breath. No inhibitions but passion for romance and love, fervor for music and dance is all what the festival is about.

At the weekend many clubs and discotheques hold parties and well known Dj’s are booked in advance. These parties could be special invitation of hundreds or just raves in thousands with several floor of dancing and drinking going on. Many people come to Berlin to be just part of these parties.

The love Parade began as a political movement, way back in summer of 1989 that was before the four months before falling of Berlin wall. A german Techno Guru Dr Motte and his closer friends together started the rave party in 1989, meeting at Kudamn to celebrate and to demonstrate Love, Friendship and Tolerance. Dr Motte, a DJ of the Berlin was inspired to use music as a medium for happiness, peace, friendship and to spread love and world unity. In his word “Music knows no boundaries and nationalities.”

The Festival had come to become banished but as it got sponsors its back with being more magnanimous and triumphant with hedonism, hope and love.

Envogue Dj’s and over a million guests, the Berlin calls for the rocking Love Parade.

Venice Carnival: The Biggest Fancy Dress

Venice, is the City of Bridges, epitome of love, built on the archipelago of hundred and eighteen islands, there are no roads in the city but canals connecting the places and Gondola used for traveling. The Venice Carnival is a time when the whole city glitters and displays its heritage and culture and celebrates it traditions. The display of festive spirit is commendable and as every citizen dresses up, Venice itself takes a fancy dress.

Venice celebrated annually, before coming of Lent, the Venice transforms back in time in the 13th century- where people wear masks, a twelve day escapade, and it’s a carnival time for Venetians. Carnival is marriage of age old history of Venice and modern festival. Venice Carnival is as Rio’s Carnival, riotous and welcomes the season of spring with such gusto. From all the pomp and festivities of Venice, Carnival is by far the best and most alluring. The city’s fairy tale backdrop and Carnival spirit is perfect for tourist to visit Venice at its best. The Venice Carnival is not parade. It’s a festive sprit all over the city.

Venice Carnival is fusion of masquerades, concerts, operas, pageants, balls and banquets it commences a week before to Lent and ends on the eve of Shrove Tuesday. Local traditions add unique flavor to the carnival. All the Venetians from rich elite’s to the plebian, express their carnival spirit and participate in the Venice Carnival. The Venice Carnival is an enchanting time, and in past it was a time where social boundaries were broken and transgressed the rules and norms of society and over turning of social order. All people did was wear beautiful carved masks on there faces and it thus made all of them equal.

The events at Venice Carnival is Vollo dell Angelo (flight of the Angels), Gran Corteo Storico (Great Historic Parade), Festa Della Marie (Celebration of The Marie), Sfilata Della Maschere (Mask Procession).

Venice Carnival completely provides for entertainment stimulating all the six senses for marry making. The events lined up are mix of old traditional customs and eclectic. During the period of Carnival revelers set aside all rules and extremity and excess is permitted. The carnival is of splendor and regal and one of the greatest festival of world.

San Marco Square is hub and heart of Venice and its Carnival. It is full of costumed locals and visitors. While most come to watch the spectacle of costumes, mask’s, street performances, and music while other are here to participate to flaunt their attires and mask. Carnival is masked extravaganza, and fancy dress, here you get your chance to dress up like Phantom of the Opera. Costumes made in calle, lace, campelli, velvet, and brocade and satins exhibit’s rich, elaborate, detailed and evoke a magical feeling.

Mask is the iconic to Venice Carnival.  The oldest document that mentions mask in Venice is dated back in May 2 1268! In the day time people show off by wearing the splendid Venetian costumes and masks. Head to Piazza and get flanked by hoards of photographers.  It is fantasy world, where you can live in land of fantasy during the days of Carnival. Costumes parade and preen throughout the day.

You will come across people putting on some old fairy tale scenes or satirical scenes like group of people donning themselves as Euros dancing with people dressed up as dollars and some group doing a fairy tale scene where group of people are dancing as wolves with one red riding hood in between. Some people are all in costumes and mask and some leaving there inhibitions are just in mask and underwear!  As you walking on some quiet canal you may encounter people having fun and enjoying the carnival fiesta. The best show in Carnival is to walk and be part of celebration with each and everyone. You will be surprised and enchanted! Endowing traditional Carnival characters such as beaked bespectacled medico, eerily pale and so many more add to the grandeur and mystique of the carnival. Parents dress up their kids and people are seen shopping in black cloaks, white masks and tricone hats.

Traditional Masks and hats are on sale everywhere, lots of temporary shops open up on streets during Carnival as it is good time to trading. A visitor can wear costume and pair it with a tricone hat and exotic masks and party till late into night.

As in the evening, carnival is carried on with a Ball for glamorous, paparazzi and glitterati- The Ballo Del Doge is held in fifteenth century palace, the Palazzo Pisani Moretta. In the memory of Doge this ball is held. He ruled Venice in the seventeenth century. It is so marvelous with celebrities making grand entry in Gondola’s. Around four hundred guest attends the ball, entertained with minuet lessons, Opera singing, traditional dances, and scrumptious dinner. The Marie’s Parade, is pageant , which is reenactment of Doge saving twelve maidens from prison of pirates. Its is celebration of Doge’s courage and triumph. With beautiful damsels, the parade begins from St Pietro di Castello church and via Garibaldi winding at St Mark’s Square.

To add the zing to the festival atmosphere, there are stalls selling snacks and drinks of traditional Venice and local specialty. Drinks like Mulled wine, Local Bellini cocktails and special Fritelle. Carnvele pastries a thin dough strips fried and dusted with powdered sugar called Tortelli or Chiacchiere fill the street stalls. Everything remains open in Venice and the city moves around in such happy and festive spirit, it spreads like wild fire.

Celebrations reach to a summit on Martedi Grasso (Fat Tuesday) when an effigy or symbol of carnival is burned in a Bonfire.

The Venice Carnival, is a large exhibition of not only its history or traditions, but in today’s’ times it resembles the human spirit to be together and celebrate the life.

Oktoberfest- Where Beer Flows Faster Then Water

The Boozing festival of Germany, where the beer flows like river and people come in millions to drink the nectar of breweries. The famous event which attracts millions of people has become the world’s largest fair which takes place annually, as five to six million people attend this festival. The most important part of Bavarian Culture, a sixteen day festival held in Munich, in Germany. It runs from late September to early October.

The first ever Oktoberfest was in 1810 to celebrate royal wedding, the occasion was marriage of the Bavarian Prince with Princess Saxony. The wedding had highlighting feature of horse races with scrumptious dinners and beers. The feast lasted for five days. The culinary delights and beer, gained more popularity then wedding ceremony and horse races and this started the Oktoberfest for people to get together to drink night and day. The Munich beer festival is an annual event, only major calamities or wars or some outbreak of epidemic can hamper the sprits of boozers from gathering.  Though the festival is known as Oktoberfest, the festival takes place in September actually, as the Bavarian Autumn is not predictable and there may be early cold and snow. The Munich Oktoberfest is generally of sixteen according to the traditions which includes the first Sunday in October. After the reunification of Germany, the schedule got modified to include October 3 the German Unity day, so festival can have up to seventeen to eighteen days.

The festival is held in Munich on an area named The Thereienwiese which means meadow of Therese; it is normally an open field or meadow, called as d’Wiesn for short. It is large open-air site.

The Oktoberfest is Largest Volkfest (People’s Fair) in the World. Six and half million visitors in some forty two hectare Wiesn. The seventy two percentage of people are from Bavaria culture and rest are the people coming not only from European counties but also from rest of the continents like America, Japan, Brazil, Australia, and many other countries. The festival is huge success and the name and the spirit of this festival has been exported to different other countries.

The Festival starts with ceremonial opening at noon. A parade is organized in which mayor comes in a coach which is decked in festive decoration followed by adorned horse- drawn brewer’s cart. The brass bands blaring the music with guest and staff and all the band people in traditional costumes of Lederhosen and Dirndls for the festive occasion. As the parade comes to end, the mayor taps the keg of beer and shouts “o’zapft is!” (The keg is tapped) or the first barrel of beer is opened successfully.

Bavarian Beer is drinked in extra extra large cups called Mass which means measure in German. Dozens of huge tents are hosted in open, all beer enthusiastic are all boozing inside it. The prestigious “Trachten- und Schützenzug” takes place.  Just imagine thousands and thousands of Dirndls and Lederhosen being carried by of German’s and foreigners including all men, women and children. Accompanied by traditional brass bands, and at their head of apparently endless stream will be the “Münchner Kindl”, “Munich’s child” who shall be riding a horse and wearing a large coat like Saint Martin did. Normally it is the young daughter of one of Oktoberfest innkeepers.

On the last day the October the third “Tag der deutschen Einheit” a German holiday for reunification of Germany people raise toast to the beer to each other in celebration of the so important day of their history.

It’s better to make reservation of tables as the tents are generally full and you may have no space and it might disappoint you. After deadlines or when the crowd is too much in tent, the tents are closed down and entry is restricted. There is a diagnostics instrument on the gate which predicts the expected number of people. So it will be better to make enquiry and plan accordingly the day of your visit. The children are supposed to live the tent after eight , as the tent get much crowded and also rowdy after drinking. Also dress warmly as it might get chilly and cold there in the night.

For food and drinks you need to pay with Biermarke- a plastic currency that is only used here to buy the products and it can bought from tents. Sometimes there is announcement of discounts and rebates, but it is only in weekdays and not on weekends. Just keep a watch or sign’s ob the booths or tents.

Tents have German music that is German Volksmusik, a folk music of Germany.  It’s just not the brass music or folk music being played; in house music with popular chart numbers is also played. ‘Its raining men’ by Weather girls is said to be all time favorite with Oktoberfest crowd.

The beer is not only attraction the festival has in store amusements like roller coaster and Olympia Loopings is amusement ride which is famous because of its enormity and speed. The circus appearances are there for the kids and some festival parades is continuously going on, to boost the festival. Also people can enjoy live brass music, can sit relax and listen or can go wild dancing.

The major attraction of Oktoberfest is the regional food. People are ravenous and gorge on:
  • Hendl –chicken (yummy)
  • Schweinsbraten- Roast Pork (awesome)
  • Haxn- knuckle of pork (exotic)
  • Steckerlfisch-grilled fish on a stick (mouth watering)
  • Wurstl- sausages along with Brezn(pretzel) and Knodeln(potato or bread dumplings) (am getting horribly hungry!)
  • Kaasspotzn cheese noodles
  • Reiberdatschi- potato pancakes
  • Sauerkraut or Rotkraut- red cabbage
  • Obtazda – a fatty spiced cheese- butter concoction
  • Weisswurst- white sausage

This is just the small list. Its heaven for all the gullible and all the food lovers.

It takes capacity, strong liver and solid stomach and good nerves to celebrate all through the festival of sixteen days of excessive drinking and intensive partying.

Every year in the Oktoberfest the local breweries brew darker and stronger beer’s the city gets drown in river of beer.

The dates of the Munich Oktoberfest in the years to come are already set:

2010: September 18 to October 3
2011: September 17 to October 3
